If Birmingham is labelled as 'party capital' because of the bars and clubs on Broad Streets, then it would be all for the wrong reasons. Jamed with light weight teenagers in beach ready dresses and shorts & tees, I immediately had a panic attack 'Am I too old for clubbing now?'. Bars around The Mail Box are more on the smart side, but sadly the bars strictly(sort of) follow X-factor category system 'boys and girls','groups(hens/stags)' or 'over 35s'. Again, I am a bit confused with which one I belong to. If London's style is all about individuality, then Mail Box surrounding bars' are all about looking perfect. Perfect hair, perfect make up, perfect dress, perfect nails....it's nice but feels a bit uptight(till they get drunk).
Outside The Mail Box
However, in the more hidden Hurst Streets area, you will not be disappointed. Although labelled as 'gay village', the area offers trendy bars, restaurants and clubs and appreciated by a very mixed crowd who just simply enjoy good music and more chilled out atmosphere. It might not up to London standard, but the crowd and music are definitely much more up market and I am relieved. The Loft Lounge has a a bit of NYC feel, plays funky music, has a busy kitchen and is good for a early warm up drink with bar snacks. The Village Inn has hilarious drag queens and it's a massive place. You might found it a bit cheesy on the ground floor, but it has a chill out outdoor garden which leads to another underground room plays R&B and Hip Hop.
